Online vs offline brewing courses: which should you choose?

You can learn brewing from your sofa or at a kettle in a working microbrewery. Neither format is simply better. This guide explains what each does well so you can pick the one that fits your life and your goal.

What online teaches well

Online courses are strong on the why. Why does a 62 to 65 °C mash give a drier beer while 68 to 70 °C leaves more body? Why does mash pH matter? Why should it sit between 5.2 and 5.6? These ideas are easier to follow when you can pause a recording and run the numbers at your own pace.

Our online courses run live on Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM IST, with a maximum of 20 students. You also get recordings, weekly assignments and a certificate. Brewing Fundamentals (4 weeks, ₹5,999) and Advanced Brewing Science (6 weeks, ₹12,999) both run this way.

Weekly assignments keep you honest. You work with your own numbers, such as gravity readings or a recipe target, so the learning sticks beyond the session. A small group of 20 also means you can put a question to the instructor live.

What online cannot do

You cannot smell a mash from a screen. You cannot feel how a grain bed behaves when it starts to set, or see how a brewer reads a hydrometer in a warm brewhouse. Working with hot liquor, heavy bags of malt and pressurised vessels is physical. A video cannot teach it fully.

If your plan is to work in a brewery, you will need hands-on time at some point. Online study builds the knowledge. That knowledge makes any later floor time far more useful.

What in person gives you

Our in-person courses take place in working microbreweries in Pune, Delhi, Gurugram and Bengaluru. In the 1-Day Super Intensive Craft Beer Course (₹25,000) you see and do a full brew day on professional kit: milling, mashing with temperature and pH checks, lautering, boil, gravity readings, the cellar and cleaning versus sanitising. The 1-Month Intensive Brewing Excellence Course (₹1,25,000) adds QC lab access, a complete brew of your own and 48 contact hours, with online study alongside.

Meals, travel and stay are not included in the month course, so budget for them. Tasting is optional and only for those of legal drinking age in that state.

How to decide

Ask yourself three things:

  • Can you attend on weekday mornings, or only on weekends?
  • Do you want knowledge first, or hands-on experience first?
  • What is your budget, including travel?

A working professional who cannot take leave will usually find online easier. Our guide on learning to brew while keeping your day job covers this in more detail. Someone weighing a career change may want an in-person day to check they like the work before they commit money and time.

One more point: do not choose in-person only because it feels more serious. A month in a brewery will not help much if you do not yet know why a mash behaves as it does. Equally, do not assume online is enough if your goal is to run a brewhouse shift.

You can combine them

The two formats are not rivals. Brewing Fundamentals is listed as both online and in person. Students who want both can pair an online course with an in-person day or month. We do not offer a bundle price. If you want to know whether an online student can add a brewery day to their plan, ask us.

Cost and time side by side

Money and time are often the deciding factor, so here is the plain comparison. Brewing Fundamentals online is ₹5,999 over four weeks, with two-hour live sessions on weekends. There is no travel and no leave to take. The 1-Day Super Intensive Craft Beer Course is ₹25,000 for one day. The 1-Month Intensive Brewing Excellence Course is ₹1,25,000 for four weeks, plus meals, travel and stay.

A higher fee buys different things. It buys time on professional kit, small groups in a real brewhouse and, on the month course, a QC lab and a complete brew of your own. It does not mean the cheaper course is a lesser one. A homebrewer who needs to understand mash chemistry will often learn more from the online course than from a day on someone else's brewhouse.

A good first move

Look at the in-person comparison page to see the cities and costs, then tell us what you want from brewing. We will suggest whether to start online or in a brewery.

Common questions

Is an online brewing course enough to become a brewer?

It builds the knowledge, but most brewing jobs need hands-on practice too. Many people combine online study with time on a real brewhouse.

Do I need to live near a brewery for the in-person courses?

The in-person courses run in Pune, Delhi, Gurugram and Bengaluru, so you will need to travel to one of them. Travel and stay are not included.

Are online courses live or recorded?

Ours run live on Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM IST. Sessions are recorded.
