Where to drink this weekend in Pune: stout
Stout scares people off with its colour. The classic dry version is one of the easiest beers to drink slowly. Six places across Pune list one.
Dry stout is lighter than it looks
A black pint makes people expect something thick, sweet and strong. The classic Irish dry stout is none of those. Most sit around 4 to 4.5 percent alcohol, with a body closer to a bitter than a strong ale. The colour and the sharp coffee bite come from roasted barley, unmalted grain roasted until it is almost charred. That gives the beer its dry, slightly acrid edge.
Look for black coffee without the milk, a firm bitterness that never turns harsh and a quick, dry finish. Nothing should taste sweet or heavy. Our Irish dry stout style page has the full profile. The dry stout guide covers how brewers build one.
Serve it at 6 to 9 °C, warmer than you would a lager. Straight out of a frosted tap the roast goes quiet, so give a very cold glass a few minutes. The traditional glass is a nonic pint, the one with the bulge near the rim, though a taster glass does the job at a brewpub.
Six places across Pune list a stout
These six are spread from the east side to the west. Beer lists come from our brewery directory, last checked September 2026. Taps rotate, so call ahead before you set out.
- Toit, Kalyani Nagar. Nitro Stout, poured on nitrogen. Toit opened here in 2019. Basmati Blonde and Tint-In-Wit are also on the list.
- Independence Brewing Company, Kalyani Nagar and Balewadi. Nitro Stout at both outlets. Band Wit and German Weissbier are the other beers listed.
- Nincasa, Mundhwa. Dry Stout, the name closest to the style page. Citrus Burst IPA and a Dunkelweizen are on the same list.
- Doolally Taproom, Koregaon Park Annexe, Ghorpadi. Oatmeal Stout. Bohemian Pilsner and Rauch Bier, a smoked beer, sit alongside it.
- Big Little Brew Pub, Kharadi. The stout is called Sleep Walk. Fool's Gold and Safe Bet are two of the others.
- Babylon Craft Brewery, Erandwane. Oatmeal Stout, with Puneri Lager and a Hefeweizen on the same board.
Two of these are oatmeal stouts. Oats in the grist give a rounder, silkier body than the dry Irish version. If you can, try one of each and notice how differently they finish.
The creamy head on a nitro pour comes from the tap
A nitro stout is pushed with a gas mix that is mostly nitrogen rather than plain carbon dioxide. At the tap it is forced through a restrictor plate, a small disc drilled with tiny holes. That knocks the gas out of the beer as a cloud of very fine bubbles, which is the slow cascade you watch settle in the glass. Nitrogen barely dissolves in beer, so the bubbles stay small and the head stays thick.
It changes the taste as well as the look. With less carbonic bite the beer feels softer and the roast reads smoother. Two of the six places above pour a Nitro Stout. Order one next to a dry stout on regular gas and you will feel the difference before you can explain it. Putting that difference into words is a skill. Our tasting guide is a good place to start.
Pune snacks suit a stout better than you would think
Dry stout is a quiet beer at the table, which is exactly why it works with Indian food. Three pairings to try:
- Vada pav. The roast lines up with the dry garlic chutney. Because the beer is light in body, it does not add weight to a fried snack.
- Chana masala with kulcha. Roasted cumin and the sour edge of amchur meet the coffee notes in the beer. The dry finish keeps a filling meal from feeling heavy.
- Chocolate barfi. A sweet cocoa barfi next to a bitter, roasty stout works the way black coffee works after dessert.
Our guide to Indian food and beer pairing explains the thinking behind matches like these.
Plan the evening around one side of the city
Kalyani Nagar is the easiest base. Toit and the Independence Brewing Company outlet both list a Nitro Stout in that one neighbourhood. Nincasa in Mundhwa next door adds a dry stout for comparison. If you live on the west side, Independence in Balewadi and Babylon in Erandwane give you a nitro stout and an oatmeal stout instead.
Order tasters or small pours, not pints. Three tasters across two stops are plenty to compare a nitro pour with a regular one. Drink a glass of water with each round and eat as you go. Book a cab or take the metro home. Never drive after drinking.
Your first step is the style page
Before you head out, open the Irish dry stout style page and read the look and aroma notes. Then pick two stops from the list above, ring them to check what is pouring and go and taste the difference for yourself.
Common questions
What temperature should a stout be served at?
Irish dry stout is best at 6 to 9 °C, a little warmer than lager. Served too cold, the roast and coffee notes go quiet.
Is a nitro stout stronger than a regular stout?
No. Nitrogen changes the bubbles and the texture, not the alcohol. Dry stouts usually sit around 4 to 4.5 percent.
Do these Pune venues always have a stout on tap?
Not always. Taps rotate, so call the venue before you go.
