Where to drink this weekend in Gurugram: hefeweizen

Gurugram brewpubs love a wheat beer. The Bavarian hefeweizen is the one to judge them by. Here is where to find it and how to plan a sensible evening around it.

Hefeweizen tastes of the yeast

Hefe means yeast and weizen means wheat. At least half the grist is wheat malt. The banana and clove in the glass come from a Bavarian yeast strain, not from fruit or spice. Over that sits a soft bread note from the wheat, a touch of lemon and almost no hop bitterness.

Serve it at 4 to 7 °C in a weizen glass, the tall, curved one that holds the big white head. With cooler December evenings in Gurugram, it is a good beer to sip slowly with food. Our German hefeweizen style page has the full profile. The hefeweizen guide explains how brewers make one.

Five Gurugram brewpubs list one

All five below are confirmed as open in our directory. Beer lists come from our brewery directory, last checked September 2026. Taps rotate, so call ahead before you set out.

  • Manhattan Bar & Brewery, Golf Course Road, Sector 43. German Wheat Beer and Hefe Weizen both appear on the list. Manhattan opened in 2013 and also lists a Dark Lager and a Belgian Wheat.
  • 7 Barrel Brew Pub, DLF Phase 1, Golf Course Road. The hefeweizen is listed simply as Wheat. Red Amber is the other beer listed.
  • Quaff Brewing Co, Cyber Hub. German Wheat Beer, with a Session Blonde Ale and an Indian Pale Ale on the same board.
  • Big Pitcher, Sector 29. Schwarzweizen, a dark wheat beer. Kingslayer is the other beer listed.
  • Downtown Diner and Fresh Beer Cafe, Sector 29. German Wheat Beer. Belgian Wheat Beer and Downtown Guava Ale are two of the others.

Effingut on Golf Course Road and Uptown Fresh Beer Cafe in DLF Phase 4 also list a wheat beer if you are nearer those.

The haze is yeast that belongs there

A hefeweizen is meant to be cloudy. The haze is yeast still in suspension. It carries much of the soft, bready texture. When a brewer filters the same beer bright, it becomes a different style, kristallweizen. Clear does not mean better here. If a hefe arrives crystal clear, ask about it. Brewers often swirl the last of a bottle to rouse the yeast before pouring it in, for exactly this reason. On draught the yeast is already in the glass.

Gurugram also gives you a useful side-by-side. Manhattan and Downtown Diner each list a German wheat and a Belgian wheat. The German one gets its banana and clove from yeast. The Belgian one, a witbier, gets its citrus and spice from orange peel and coriander added in the brewhouse. Taste them next to each other and you will remember the difference for good. Smell first, sip second, then go back to the smell.

Big Pitcher's Schwarzweizen is the third angle: the same yeast character under darker malt. Most drinkers notice that the beers differ. Naming exactly what changed is the trained part. Our tasting guide gets you started.

Three dishes that suit a hefeweizen

Low bitterness and plenty of bubbles make this an easy beer at an Indian table.

  • Butter chicken. The banana and soft wheat sit well with a creamy, mild tomato gravy. The fizz cuts through the butter.
  • Vada pav. The clove note picks up the garlic chutney. The carbonation handles the fried batter.
  • Malabar parotta with vegetable stew. Coconut milk, whole spice and flaky layers match the beer's soft body and gentle spice.

Our guide to Indian food and beer pairing covers the principles behind these.

Pair stops that share a neighbourhood

Sector 29 is the simplest plan: Big Pitcher and Downtown Diner are both listed there, which gives you a dark wheat, a German wheat and a Belgian wheat in one area. On Golf Course Road, Manhattan in Sector 43 and 7 Barrel in DLF Phase 1 make a second pairing.

Order tasters, not pints. Two venues and three or four small pours are plenty for an evening. Drink water with every round and eat as you go. Use a cab or the metro. Never drive after drinking.

Start with the style page

Before Friday evening, open the German hefeweizen style page and read the aroma notes. Then ring your first stop to check the wheat beer is on and go and taste it fresh.

Common questions

What is the difference between a hefeweizen and a witbier?

A hefeweizen gets banana and clove from its yeast. A witbier gets citrus and spice from orange peel and coriander added during brewing.

What is a Schwarzweizen?

A dark wheat beer. It uses the same kind of yeast as a hefeweizen, with darker malt in the grist.

Do I need to call ahead?

Yes. Taps rotate, so check the hefeweizen is pouring before you set out.
