Where to drink this weekend in Gurugram: pale ale
American pale ale is the hoppy beer you can stay with for an evening. Gurugram has four places with one on the list this weekend, from Cyber Hub to Sector 29. Here are the beers, the dishes and a short route that keeps two of them close together.
Pale ale is the hoppy beer you can drink slowly
Pour one and the hops arrive first: grapefruit peel, orange, a bit of pine, sometimes a floral edge. Underneath sits a pale, biscuity malt base with a touch of caramel, enough to carry the bitterness without turning sweet. The finish is dry and firm. It should leave you wanting a second sip rather than a glass of water.
The style took shape in California around 1980, when small brewers began using Cascade, then a new American hop, in a beer built on the English pale ale template. Swap the earthy English hops for loud citrus ones. Swap the fruity English yeast for a clean American strain. That clean yeast is the quiet part of the recipe: it leaves almost no fruity esters, so everything you smell is hops and malt. Later hops such as Centennial, Citra and Simcoe pushed the style towards tropical fruit.
What keeps it apart from an IPA is restraint. It is lighter in alcohol, lighter in bitterness and more balanced, so the malt still has a say. At around 5% it suits a long dinner better than a big double IPA does. Ask for it at 7 to 10 °C in a nonic pint. Our American pale ale style page has the full profile.
Four places to try one, from Cyber Hub to Sector 29
These come from our brewery directory, which we last checked in September 2026. Taps rotate, so call ahead before you go.
- Soi 7 Pub & Brewery, Cyber Hub. Open since 2012. Its pale ale is Straight Jab, with Upper Cut as the other beer on the list.
- 7 Barrel Brew Pub, DLF Phase 1, Golf Course Road. Red Amber is the beer our directory files under pale ale. A Wheat is also on the list.
- BrewDog, Golf Course Road. Opened in August 2022. Dead Pony Club is the pale ale, alongside Punk IPA, Hazy Jane and Lost Lager. Its status in our directory is unverified, so ring before you head over.
- Downtown Diner and Fresh Beer Cafe, Sector 29. Downtown Guava Ale is the one listed as a pale ale. The Premium Lager and German Wheat Beer are there too.
Four beers filed under one style. No two will taste alike. One may carry more caramel, one more citrus, one a fruit addition. Working out which differences are the style and which are the brewer's choices is where tasting gets interesting. It is also where most of us need a guide the first few times.
One practical note: hop aroma is the first thing heat takes from a pale ale. Draught at the brewpub that made it is the freshest you will find. If a glass smells dull rather than citrusy, it is fair to ask when the keg went on.
Chicken 65 and paneer tikka are made for it
Pale ale has enough bitterness to stand up to spice and enough malt to meet char and sweetness halfway.
- Chicken 65. The bitterness cuts through the fried coating. Citrus hops pick up the curry leaf and green chilli.
- Paneer tikka. Char on the paneer meets the caramel note in the malt. The hops lift the smoky marinade.
- Hyderabadi mirchi ka salan. A tangy, nutty gravy. Firm bitterness holds its ground without letting the chilli take over.
For dessert, carrot halwa: the malt echoes the ghee-roasted carrot. The dry finish stops the pudding feeling heavy.
Golf Course Road keeps two stops close
7 Barrel and BrewDog are both on Golf Course Road, which makes them the natural pair. Taste Red Amber against Dead Pony Club and you have two quite different readings of the same style. Order tasters, eat at the first stop and keep water on the table. If BrewDog does not answer the phone, Soi 7 at Cyber Hub makes a good single-stop evening instead.
Take a cab or the metro home. Whoever is driving stays off the beer for the night: never drink and drive.
Start with the style page
Open the pale ale style page before Friday and note what to smell for: citrus peel, pine, biscuit. Our pale ale guide explains how the style is brewed. For more dishes, Indian food and beer pairing picks up where this list stops.
Common questions
How is a pale ale different from an IPA?
A pale ale is lighter in alcohol and bitterness and more balanced, so the malt still comes through. An IPA pushes the hops and bitterness further.
What temperature should a pale ale be served at?
Around 7 to 10 °C, in a nonic pint glass.
What does an American pale ale smell like?
Grapefruit peel, orange and pine from American hops, sometimes floral, over a pale biscuit malt with a touch of caramel.
