New hop varieties brewers are trying in 2026
Breeders on four continents have released a crop of new hops since mid-2025. We list the ones with real supplier data behind them, what they taste like, how brewers are dosing them and what it takes to get them into an Indian brewhouse.
Why so many at once
In April 2026 the writer Jeff Alworth counted ten new hop varieties released in a single year. That is a lot for a crop that takes a decade or more to breed. The reason sits in the field as much as the glass. Growers have cut acreage for several years running and the hot summers keep coming, so breeders now select for yield, disease resistance and heat tolerance alongside aroma.
The 2026 German harvest showed why. The Brewers Association reported in September that newer varieties such as Titan, Tango and Hüll Classic held their yield and alpha better than the old landraces during a record heatwave.
United States: fruit for the cold side, alpha for the kettle
Dolcita (HBC 1019) from the Hop Breeding Company was named and launched by Yakima Chief Hops in August 2025. Alpha runs about 10 to 12%. Expect ripe peach, pineapple, tangerine and a creamy note, which is why it is being pitched at hazy IPA.
Beervana's April round-up gives the others. Thora, a public variety from the USDA at Corvallis sold by Crosby Hops, sits near 9% alpha with passionfruit, guava and grapefruit over a dank, resinous base. Celeste from West Coast Hop Breeding (8 to 10% alpha) was bred for Oregon's wetter climate and organic growing, with passionfruit, honeydew and pine. Vera from USDA Prosser is a low-alpha aroma hop (4 to 5.5%) with candy-like pineapple and stone fruit.
At the other end, in August 2026 the Hop Breeding Company launched a high-alpha bittering pair, TerraSurge (HBC 1325) and TerraFlux (HBC 682), through Yakima Chief Hops and John I. Haas. These are bought for cheap, steady IBUs rather than aroma.
Germany: noble character that survives a hot summer
Hüll Classic is the Hüll research centre's answer to fragile landraces. It was among the new entries on the IHGC variety list for 2025, with 4.5 to 8% alpha and an herbal, grassy, lightly spicy and fruity profile close to traditional German aroma hops. Hopsteiner's Nobella is pitched the same way, a noble-type hop at 7 to 9% alpha with steadier yields.
For a lager brewer these matter more than any tropical newcomer. If Hallertau Mittelfrüh or Tettnanger are short, they are the hops to trial in a Pilsner.
New Zealand and Australia: big fruit, limited volume
Clayton Hops launched NZ Rhapzody (formerly CIP014) on 10 February 2026, with brew trials reporting intense tropical and citrus notes. Beervana lists it at 12 to 14% alpha with passionfruit, mango and peach.
Hop Products Australia announced Luna (formerly HPA-033) in a media release of 3 March 2026: mango, dark berry and spicy citrus with high polyphenols for mouthfeel, around 13 to 15% alpha. HPA's own usage note suggests 1 to 2 g/L in a late whirlpool for the citrus side and 4 to 10 g/L as a dry hop for mango and body. Supply is limited for now.
United Kingdom: a transatlantic cross
Karma is a joint project between Puterbaugh Farms (Hops Direct) in Yakima and Charles Faram in the UK. Beervana lists it at about 9% alpha, a dual-purpose hop with orange cream, berry and mint. It is one to watch for best bitter and pale ale brewers who want a little more fruit without going full tropical.
How to trial a new hop without wasting a batch
A supplier sheet tells you alpha and oil. It does not tell you how the hop behaves in your water, with your yeast, in Indian heat. We run a single-hop pale ale or Pilsner, add the hop in the whirlpool after the wort has dropped to about 80 °C and hold it for 20 minutes, then dry hop. Brew a control with a hop you know beside it. Our guide to trialling a new hop variety walks through the sensory side.
Reading those results well, knowing whether a thin finish came from the hop or the mash, is the part a data sheet cannot teach.
What it means for a brewer in India
None of these hops is grown here. Every gram is imported. New varieties land in small lots that sell out fast or go first to contract holders. Ask your importer early, accept that the first year may be a 5 kg trial pack rather than a full season's supply and check the crop year on the bag.
Freshness does the rest. A hop that crossed the sea well and then sat in a warm godown will taste like an old one. Keep it frozen, as our hop storage guide explains. See sourcing malt and hops in India for the import route.
Common questions
Which new hop is best for a hazy IPA?
Dolcita, Luna and Rhapzody were all pitched at fruit-forward beers. Trial them as a dry hop alongside a hop you already know before you change a core recipe.
Is there a new hop for lager brewers?
Hüll Classic and Nobella are both noble-type aroma hops bred to cope better with heat. They suit Pilsner and Helles where the old German landraces are short.
Can I buy these new hops in India?
Some, in small lots, through importers who work with the big hop merchants. Supply of brand-new varieties is limited, so ask early and expect trial quantities first.
