Where to drink this weekend in Mumbai: stout

Stout is the dark beer that suits Mumbai weather best, because a good one is light bodied and dry. Two breweries carry one across six outlets this weekend, an oatmeal stout and a nitro stout. Here is where to find them, what to eat and how to taste both in one evening.

Stout is lighter than it looks

Irish dry stout is the beer most people picture when they hear the word stout. Most are around 4 to 4.5 percent, with a body closer to a bitter than a strong ale. The black colour and sharp coffee bite come from roasted barley, unmalted grain roasted until almost charred. It usually makes up around 10 percent of the grist and gives the dry, slightly acrid edge that defines the style.

The style grew out of London porter, which Dublin brewers adapted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries until it became their own. Flaked barley helps the head. Many breweries pour it on nitrogen, which gives the slow cascade and the thick, creamy collar of foam.

Look for coffee without the milk, firm but not harsh bitterness and a quick, dry finish. Nothing should be sweet or heavy. Ask for it at 6 to 9 °C in a nonic pint: cooler than most stouts, but not ice cold, or the roast turns thin. Our Irish dry stout style page has the full profile.

Two stouts, six places across the city

Mumbai's directory list for stout is short this week: two breweries, two beers, six outlets. These come from our brewery directory, which we last checked in September 2026. Taps rotate, so call ahead.

  • Doolally Taproom, Andheri West. Open since 2015. The stout is an Oatmeal Stout, with Belgian Witbier, Bohemian Pilsner and a Rauch Bier on the same list.
  • Doolally Taproom, Khar West. The same Oatmeal Stout. Try the Rauch Bier if you have never had a smoked beer.
  • Doolally Taproom, Kemps Corner. The same Oatmeal Stout, with the same Belgian Witbier and Bohemian Pilsner alongside.
  • Doolally Taproom, Hiranandani Estate, Thane West and Sanpada, Palm Beach Road. Two more outlets with the Oatmeal Stout and the same list around it.
  • Independence Brewing Company, Seven Bunglows, Andheri West (Versova). A Nitro Stout. Band Wit and German Weissbier are the other two.
  • Independence Brewing Company, Powai. The same Nitro Stout and the same pair alongside it.

Neither beer is labelled an Irish dry stout, which is useful. Use the dry stout as your yardstick and ask where each one sits against it. Is the oatmeal version fuller and softer? Does the nitro pour feel creamier than it tastes? Those are good questions. Answering them with confidence is something you learn by tasting alongside people who do it for a living.

The good news for a humid city is that stout keeps better than most styles. Roasted barley is stable, so the beer holds up well in transit and in the heat. You are far less likely to meet a tired stout than a tired IPA, which makes it a forgiving order on a muggy evening.

Bombay duck fry is the stout's best friend

A dry, roasty beer does the same job for fried, salty food that it does for oysters in Ireland.

  • Bombay duck fry. Crisp, salty bombil wants something dry and roasty to cut the oil.
  • Vada pav. The roast plays off the dry garlic chutney. A light body does not weigh down a fried snack.
  • Chana masala with kulcha. Roasted cumin and amchur meet the coffee notes. The dry finish keeps the meal light.

For something sweet, chocolate barfi. The stout gives it a bitter counterweight, like black coffee after dessert.

Andheri West puts both stouts within reach

Doolally and Independence both have outlets in Andheri West, so this is the one neighbourhood where you can taste the Oatmeal Stout and the Nitro Stout on the same evening. Order a taster of each, not a pint. Eat at the first stop. Watch the nitro pour settle before you drink, because the cascade is half the point.

Keep water on the table between beers. Take a cab, an auto or the metro home. Nobody in the group drives after drinking.

Common questions

Is stout a strong beer?

Not usually. Irish dry stout is around 4 to 4.5 percent alcohol, lighter than many lagers, even though it looks heavy.

What does nitro mean on a stout?

The beer is poured with nitrogen, which gives a slow cascade of bubbles and a thick, creamy head.

What temperature should stout be served at?

Around 6 to 9 °C. Too cold and the roast turns thin and flat.
