What it tastes like

Robust porter is largely an American craft brewing take on the old London style. Brewers kept the chocolate backbone of porter and pushed everything a notch further: more dark malt, more hop bitterness, a little more strength. The result sits in the space between a brown porter and a stout, and the border is genuinely blurry.

Expect dark chocolate and coffee first, then caramel and some bready sweetness underneath. Roast is clear but should stay on the chocolate side of burnt. Hops show as firm bitterness and, in American versions, a light piney or resinous note. Alcohol is usually 5 to 6.5 percent, so it has weight without being a sipping beer.

How do you tell it from a stout? Roughly, porter leans on chocolate malt and stout leans on roasted barley, which gives a drier, more coffee-ash edge. In practice, judge the beer in front of you. If the roast tastes like espresso and the body is fuller and drier, you are close to stout territory.

In India

A robust porter is a dark beer with enough bitterness and roast to stand next to strong Indian flavours, which is more than most dark beers can say. The firm hops also help it hold up a little better through a warm supply chain than sweet, low-hop styles. Order it at the brewpub rather than hunting for cans, because fresh roast and hop aroma fade fast in heat. Cool winter nights in Pune or Delhi suit it, and so does a barbecue.
